This is one of the most unique 19th century advertising set of booklets considered by many in the comic book industry as one of the first Platinum age comics. Issued by The Barker, Moore & Mein Medicine Co. Philadelphia,Pa. From 1892-1894, Barker, Moore& Medicine Co. produced a 150-page book that was later split and reissued as 40+-page premium books in the early 1900's. These colorful cover 9.5" x 6.25" books were known asBarker's "Komic" Picture Souvenir, parts 1,2 3 and 4. Interestinglyenough, these books predate the Buster Brown premium books. And they featurereprinted advertising cartoons that were pictured previously in Barker'sIllustrated Almanac. These books were heavily promotional, featuringexamples of Barker products in every comic panel. The art of these satiricalbooks included a hodge-podge of circus animals, clowns, and disfigured,out-of-proportion (and borderline grotesque) onlookers of all shapes, sizes, ages and races set in scenes that ranged from farming to death and every otherimaginable social and economic issue of the era. Today, these books, afew of which have been CGC graded, are desired by various collectors due totheir specific content. These may include collectors of Black Americana, PaperEphemera, and Comic Books. This set is complete with complete attached covers each exhibiting some wear and light creasing--books 1 & 2 each have a 2" tear on back cover---interior pages are complete with very minimal wear.
